Speaking Activities (Print)

Hobbies and Free time activities


            Time: 35-60 minutes               
            Possible procedures: A. Students take it in turns to pick up a card and mime the hobby for the other students to guess. 
B. Students take it in turns to choose, describe and guess the hobby. Encourage students to not say any of the words or the hobby on the card.
            Possible structures: Are you good at...? Are you ...? 


            Time: 35 minutes
            Possible procedures: Students take it in turns to describe and guess the names of the hobby from other students' descriptions. Encourage students to not say any of the words on the card or their variations.

Alike: A descriptive video

 

Today,

We are going to watch the video below. It is about a father and his son. 

You are going to:

  • Describe the entire video while you watch it. 
  • You need to describe: 
    • The background:
      •  Place- Where is the person? What's the colour of the place?
      • Surrounding- What furniture or items are in the surrounding?
      • Time-  What time of the day is it?
      • Weather- What is the weather like?
    • Emotion: happy, sad, angry, tired, etc.
    • The clothing of the people
    • The physical features: He has got blond/dark brown/ feathers and He is short/thin/fat/blue
    • Actions of the people: What is he doing? What are they doing?
BE AS DESCRIPTIVE AS POSSIBLE, REMEMBER I CANNOT SEE THE VIDEO.
We will stop at 3:08 of the video to summarise the events thus far in the video and review any learnt vocabulary.

      •  Surrounding- What furniture or items are in his surrounding?

Entertainment and Media: Lesson 1

Let's Play a Game:


Let's play a snakes and ladder board game. You will need a counter and an online dice.

How to play:

  • Each player puts his counter on "start here".
  • Take it in turns to roll the dice.
  • Move your counter forward the number of spaces shown on the dice.
  • Ask a player one of the questions about Entertainment below or create your own question.
  • If your counter lands at the bottom of a ladder, you can move up to the top of the ladder.
  • If your counter lands on the head of a snake, you must slide down to the bottom of the snake.
  • The first player to get to the space that says 'home' is the winner.

  • Talk about their emotions.

Useful Structures:
Question: Are you good at ... ( hobbies)? For example: Are you good at doing ballet?
I am good at (hobbies).
I am great at (hobbies).
I am not so good at (hobbies).
I am terrible at (hobbies).

How to Play memory game:

  • Mix the cards then place them face down on the table.
  • Players take it in turn to turn over two cards of their choice in order to try and create a pair. 
  • Players show the cards to all the players.
  • If the two cards are identical, the player keeps them. 
  • If the two cards are not identical, he places them face down in the same place. 
  • It is then the turn of the next player to turn over two cards.
  • The game ends when there are no more cards on the table.
  • The player who has the most pairs wins.

First you have some time to look at the task.

Travel and Holidays: Lesson 2

 A Day Trip to Paris!

These pictures show different holiday activities. 
Describe these activities:

Answer the questions below.

  6. Make a list of the questions that David asked. He asked 2 important questions.

Task:

Imagine that you and your friend spent last Saturday together. Create story about what you did. Make your story as interesting as possible. 
Use these questions to help you:

  • What time did you arrive in the city?
  • What three activities did you do?
  • What interesting thing happened?
  • What time did you leave the city to go home?
Use these discourse markers in your story:


For example:
It started when we went to London by plane. At 10 o'clock, we arrived at our hotel. Then we went to a restaurant to have hot chocolate and cookies for breakfast. It was delicious. Next, we visited the museum. Suddenly, there were a lot of people on the road so it was difficult for us to leave the museum. Eventually, we got outside where we saw the best football player in the world. He was signing autographs and taking pictures. We joined the line so that we could get a picture. Unfortunately our bus arrived so we had to leave. While we were walking toward the bus, it started to move. Before long, we started running. In the end, we missed it. As a result, we took a taxi. It was very expensive. Finally, we got home at 11:00 pm and went to bed.

Describing People: Sketch the thieves

Describing people: Features


We are going to learn how to describe people.
We use the verb 'to be' to describe:
  • height
I am tall.
  • body build:
She is slim.
  • age:
He is old.
Describe the people. You can use these adjectives: tall, short, young, old, slim, medium.

Facial features:

We use 'has got' and 'have got' to describe hair colour, hair length and facial features.
Facial Features are eyes, nose, eyebrows, ears, mouth, lips and chin. 
Vocabulary to describe people's features
